Manchester United and Tottenham are leading the race to sign
Christian Eriksen this summer, according to Source.
Eriksen joined Brentford earlier in a six-month deal in January
on his return from an enforced absence after his health nearly failed during
last summer’s European Championships.
He was offered a long-term deal by the Bees, but his impressive
performances, which included a goal and a four assists, has led to interest from
other Premier League clubs.
Manchester United and Tottenham are said to be in talks with
Eriksen and his team, and are closer to agreeing a deal than Newcastle,
according to The Northern
Echo.
The report states that Magpies boss Eddie Howe sees Eriksen as a
‘potentially exciting addition’ and the recruitment team at St James’ Park have
‘been in touch’.
But it’s claimed United and Tottenham have ‘held more
substantive talks and are regarded as the chosen
ones to pull off the deal.
Manchester United Manager Erik ten Hag has made midfield
additions his priority this summer, with the club rumoured to be close to
completing a move for Frenkie de Jong and holding an interest in both Wolves’
Ruben Neves and Vitinha from Porto.
Antonio Conte at Tottenham meanwhile is said to be keen on
reuniting with Eriksen, whom he worked with in their time together at Inter
Milan.
He said: “Manchester United ’s pursuit of Frenkie De Jong
is completely underwhelming.
“He reminds me a bit of Martin Odegaard in the way he was
trumpeted as, ‘The next big thing’, before moving to Spain and then failed to
reach the heights expected of him. At least Odegaard was 16 when he joined Real
Madrid, not 21, as De Jong was when he moved to Barcelona.
“Don’t get me wrong, De Jong is a good player, he has all the
attributes and would be a decent addition to the squad. But I ask myself if
he’s someone who will take United to the next level and the answer, frankly,
is, ‘No’. Actually, he reminds me of his compatriot Donny van de Beek.
“Ajax produced a full-page farewell to Van de Beek when he
joined United, saying ‘Look after him’. And Edwin van der Sar, a legend at both
Ajax and United, was raving about him.
Yet it didn’t happen for him at Old Trafford and I’m not sure it will for De
Jong.
“I know Van de Beek didn’t get the opportunities he deserved at
United and De Jong will be given a chance by Erik ten Hag. But if I’m at
Liverpool or Manchester City, then I’m certainly not going to be worrying that
Manchester United look likely to sign Frenkie de Jong this summer.”
Wherever he goes, it will be nice to see him back in action.
